who needs a limo?

...or, "how we got to the hotel on our wedding night"

so let's talk about how pat and i got home on the best night of our lives.  the dancing had been done and the DJ was playing "new york, new york" by frank sinatra in true yankee stadium end of game spirit as people filed out of the yacht club.  the school buses were there waiting to pick people up and we hopped on the first available one, followed by several of our friends and cousins.  one of my cousins, on her way on the bus, started singing "i throw my hands up in the air sometimes, singing aaaay-yo, gotta leeet go" and that was all it took for the entire bus to join in song to "dynamite", taio cruz.  it was hilarious.  we were all having such a good time, in fact, that it seemed only right to skip the hotel drop off and instead have the bus drop us off at the local margarita bar, right down the street.  great idea, that is, until it was time to leave.

if you happened to be in branford, ct, on that night, you may have seen several people attempt to walk to the hotel from margaritas (about a mile down the street).  most people got lucky with a cab and one of my cousins even got a ride home from a cop.  pat and i?  we had alternative transportation in store for us that not even the two of us could have imagined :)

we attempted an irish exit (when you leave without saying goodbye to eliminate the big to-do) from the bar.  sounds horrible but really at this point in the night no one would have even noticed the bride and groom in a mexican restaurant trying to sneak out.  we thought we were so sneaky and my brother even called us a cab.  so we waited out front.  and we waited.  and waited (mind you it was probably like 5 minutes but felt like forever).

so out of the bar come two kids who couldn't have been more than 18 years old.  they saw us standing there and jokingly asked "do you guys need a ride?"  to which we surprised them by saying "actually, yeah!"  so they led us over to their 2-door '87 pontiac grand am that looked like it might actually kick the bucket and not even make it 1 mile down the road.  the guy was kind enough to sit in the back, squeezed in the middle seat because their baby seat was on one side and pat was on the other.  the girl and i sat in front and my seat was leaned so far back i was practically laying down.  after the 2 minute ride they dropped us off at the hotel and we offered them $10 - which they took!  it was absolutely hysterical.  we got in the hotel and looked at each other saying "well i definitely didn't picture that happening tonight!"

it was truly priceless and the best part was at brunch the next day, groggy people asking "hey, how did you get home last night?" and re-capping our escapade.  i bet the kids who drove us home thought it was just as funny as us... except they were $10 richer afterwards :)

  2. This is one of the funniest things I've read in a long time. Love it!!!

I'm considering nixing the limo and just calling a cab. Nothing says "we just got married" than a Austin cab driver who probably doesn't speak English and yaps on his cell phone the whole time.

  5. Haha, we burst out of the hotel where most of our guests were staying at 3:30 AM and stood on a street corner for a few minutes until a cab happened by. Then we (me, the new hubby, my maid of honor and his friend from college) piled in and took a cab home! His friend was supposed to get dropped off on the way but he was staying with family and I did NOT want to be that person that dropped him off at 3:30 in the morning when he was as drunk as he was...so he came with us and crashed on our couch ;)
