that old familiar knot

is in my stomach.  it must be sunday night.  wouldn't it be amazing if you could do what you love everyday and not feel like this before monday showed its ugly face?

i'm getting so tired of corporate america BS, more and more every week...

until i win the lottery though, i'll suck it up and keep moving on - gotta pay the bills somehow!

if i could blog and plan weddings and events everyday, and still get a paycheck, then we'd be talking!

purple teeth

i hate getting purple teeth from red wine!  there's no solution, except to just drink white.  but today pat and i are going to the famous ZAP (zinfandel advocates & producers) 19th annual zinfandel festival, where over 200 winerys will pour their favorite zinfandel for tastings.

to clarify, zinfandel is a variety of red grape planted in over 10% of california vineyards.  the grapes typically produce a robust red wine with lots of fruit forward and jammy flavor.  it is sometimes mistaken for it's italian twin, primativo.

this is not what you're probably thinking (see below), which is the white zinfandel which my mom loves and is actually the top selling wine in the country.  we're going for the reds today folks!

we've got the tunes!

dj or band.  band or dj?  live music during cocktail hour?  blast an iPod mix?  what to do??

because we are planning our entire wedding from the other side of the country, we don't have the luxury of being able to go and watch bands perform, meet with them, and decide if we like them or not.  we've been slaves to youtube and cheesy websites, and it just hasn't been cutting it.  by the way, if you're interested, "september" by earth, wind, and fire seems to be the most popular demo song out there these days :).

so...we finally decided on a DJ and couldn't be happier.  we booked After Hours DJ after getting chased by a few other vendors for a while now.  our man sal on the other hand, didn't pressure us at all.  he was so helpful and spent 50 minutes on a conference call with me and pat, walking through the entire day and what to expect.  he had us thinking of things we never even thought of, like honoring anniversaries and do we want to kiss when people clink their glasses with the silverware (of course!), and so many other aspects of the day that never even came to mind.  they set up a website for us to go online and pick the songs we want and also the ones for the do-not-play list :)

those who know me well know how much i love music.  i was always the DJ on road trips and at parties i'm usually working the iPod playlists - so to now have the opportunity to put so much creativity in to the musical aspect of our wedding, you could say i'm pretty excited!

it's all coming together!

how cool is my mom?

pretty much the coolest and greatest woman on the planet.  she is a middle school music teacher in new haven, ct, and her job has been no easy feat!  from challenging parents to students who need the extra push, she puts in 110% everyday to give her kids the best education they can get and i am so proud of her!  she spent all of her time with me and my brother when we were children and when we were old enough, she went back to school to get her degree in education, one of her lifelong dreams.  now she does what she loves - who could ask for any more than that!

remind me of this the next time i get that knot in my stomach on a sunday night, knowing that monday awaits :)

bridesmaid dress fashion show - page style

my cousin claudia and i had a great time on saturday looking for bridesmaid dresses.  nothing about my wedding has been traditional so far, and since all of my bridesmaids are on the east coast, i went with claudia in san francisco to try on some dresses out here to start and narrow down which ones we like!

here's some shots from our day (sorry Claud!)

why do i look so angry!  :)

i like the fabric on this one!

we liked this one a lot, but with some different blues instead of the colors on here

we liked this one too, obviously in different colors

this one was a bit low cut but we liked the look and shape of it

and this one was for the girls - they liked it online!

the search continues but we are getting closer and closer!  i think i still need to meet with my bridesmaids so they can all try them on too, and find one they feel most comfortable in.

until then...

the dress!

i am so excited!!!!  i found the one!  funny how that term seems to follow you around while planning a wedding.

i went to new jersey this week for a meeting at work, and one night after work i called my friend sam to see if she wanted to head over to ally's bridal with me, a custom-made dress shop in hoboken, nj.  along with sam, two of my other friends had purchased their dresses at ally's too, and i actually bought my bridesmaid dress for sam's wedding here too.  ally is an amazing seamstress and some of these designs seriously look like they're straight off the runway - but custom-made!

so sam and i went in and i pulled a few dresses i thought i'd like, and then ally recommended that i try one other dress on that i actually didnt even pull.  it had a high neckline and straps and was totally not my style.  but with a few safety pins, ally was able to transform this neckline and when i tried it on, sam and i both liked it but there was still something missing.  with one more quick and easy alteration, sam and i both knew it was the one!  i was a little sad because, living across the country and finding the dress in NJ, my mom wasn't able to see it and be there.  but like i said, we went together to my first try so i am happy to have been able to do that!  so i texted a few pics to my mom and bought the dress on the spot!

i can't wait to go back in june for my first fitting!

no kleinfeld for this bride

...and i am OK with it!

yes i was very excited about the kleinfeld trip and even a chance of appearing on "say yes to the dress".  but these days, my arms have a tendency to wave goodbye to people even if i'm waving hello, and i am not feeling 100% bridal shopping-ready.  especially not in public or with a chance of landing on a national TV show!!  and on top of all that, i really don't want to spend thousands on a dress i will wear for 1 day.  sounds a bit cliche, but right now i'm on operation SAVE money - and i don't think those 2 words are in the vocabulary of the kleinfeld staff, as fun as the experience would be.  so i'm canceling my appointment i was so excited about and i'm going to take another look out here in california instead.

i'm glad i was able to take my first dress-shopping trip with my mom and brother, and experience the thrill of putting on a gown for the first time, trying them on with my mom there, and testing out her mantilla veil (i will be wearing her veil on my wedding day and i am so excited about it) with different gowns.  the point is that i am sooooo happy i was able to try everything for the first time with my mom there, and now i can feel comfortable continuing my dress quest in san francisco knowing that we had that special first trial moment together and i don't have to feel bad or sad about looking out here too.  back to the story....

there's a great place called the Glamour Closet - yes, the name reminds me of a bad 80's prom dress shop or something - the word "glamour" is just horrible and all i can think of is Glamour Shots and that girl from Napoleon Dynamite...

Photo from: www.the-reel-mccoy.com

anyways... the Glamour Closet has sample dresses on sale at 75% off retail prices - gowns from Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier, Melissa Sweet, Carolina Herrera, Reem Acra, Amsale, Kenneth Pool, Pronovias, Enzoani, and La Sposa.... just to name a few!

additionally, each year, a portion of Glamour Closet's profits are donated to foundations dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson's disease.  so not only are you buying the most important piece of clothing in your life to date, but you're also supporting a company who understands the bigger picture in life.

so next saturday, january 23, i will be going with my cousin and possibly a few san francisco girlfriends to try on some dresses at the GC (doesnt it sound better that way?  hehe) and a few other bridal shops in town.

until then, operation hit-the-gym and GMAOTC (get my ass off the couch) has hit in full speed.  if you see me flailing on the treadmill or struggling to do my final set of arm moves, send some motivation my way :)

new day, new photographer!

yes - we have a new photographer!  we mutually parted ways with our initial photographer, so no hard feelings there, but we had to get going quickly one we knew we had to look for someone else.

like i said in previous posts, i literally had a spreadsheet with all of the potential photographers and i was able to get back in touch with one of our favorites, who was thankfully still available!!

we are now working with Graham Scobey who is part of Carla Ten Eyck's photograpy studio (one of the best in the industry!).  i am so excited to be working with Graham for our wedding.

check out his website!
